By affecting the quantity of eicosanoids and cytocins, the Omega-3 fatty acids i.e. ALA jointly with the EPA ja DHA derived from it, help the human system to defend itself against foreign molecules, bacteria and viruses.

Furthermore, ALA may prevent the delayed reaction of the human system caused by hypersensitivity, which is a typical consequence of certain antigens (Kelley et al. 1991).
